Alpinism is a sport discipline based on the difficulties to be surmounted when climbing a mountain. This mountaineering sport can take place on rocks, snow or ice. The fundamental difference between alpinism in itself and the sports discipline of climbing is the fact that whereas the goal of alpinism means reaching the top of a mountain, the main target of climbing is mastering a natural or artificial wall or a section of wall, where the encountered difficulties are generally higher. Another difference between alpinism and wall climbing, is that in general the difficulties encountered during alpinism are mainly connected with the environment (for instance altitude, ice, exposition to weather changes, remoteness to inhabited places) whereas with wall climbing, technical difficulties prevail (for instance overhangs, scarcity of footholds and supports).

This is why practicing alpinism - apart from an adequate physical preparation - demands a particular knowledge of the mountain environment, whereas wall climbing requires a specific physical training to maximum levels. It is also true that the continuously increasing level of difficulty during wall climbing, has contributed to the ascents in alpine environments, where the level of difficulty has also increased.
